Use of thrombolysis in acute pulmonary embolism.

MT Cardio. Volume 1, Number 4, 343-8, JUILLET-AOÛT 2005, Revue

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Gabriel Thabut

Summary : The use of thrombolytic agents in patients with acute pulmonary embolism remains largely debated. In one hand, thrombolytic agents are able to resolve pulmonary vascular obstruction faster than heparin alone, leading to a rapid improvement in hemodynamic parameters. In the other hand, the use of these treatments is associated with potentially life-threatening side effects. Up to now, less than 1 000 patients with acute pulmonary embolism have been enrolled in prospective controlled trials aiming to compare thrombolysis and heparin, precluding any meaningful conclusion. The aim of this study is to summarize the current evidence of the benefit of thrombolytic agents in patients with acute pulmonary embolism.

Keywords : thrombolysis, pulmonary embolism
