Summary : Oral antiplatelet agent (OAA) interruption in stable coronary artery disease is a frequent situation but deserves further clinical evaluation. Prevention of perioperative bleeding is the most frequent reason of OAA interruption. However, this interruption is associated with a progressive recovery of platelet function leading to a potential rebound of thrombotic events. Three major issues warrant further investigations. Is there sufficient clinical evidence for interrupting OAA? Is this interruption harmful? Should substitution therapy be used is this particular setting? All these issues are of particular clinical interest in the current era of drug eluting stent development. |
