Consequences of parental neglect on infants

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 88, Number 3, 195-207, Mars 2012, Pathologie des interactions parents-enfants

Résumé   Texte intégral

Author(s) : Nicole Garret-Gloanec, Anne-Sophie Pernel

Summary : The consequences on children of physical or sexual abuse are well-known. It is different in terms of negligence and less easy to identify. However, there are many children and adults treated in psychiatry, from families with multiple problems or who are vulnerable, that have a history of neglect of their parents towards them. What is negligence? How is it possible to understand that parents can be negligent toward their children? Why is neglect often passed on from generation to generation? The author proposes to assess a point on neglect and its effects on the child based on personal experience at a specific baby and parents clinic (unit for babies 0-3 years) over a period of some 10 years. After a definition of the concept of negligence and an overview of the general characteristics of the families involved, this article offers a description of the observed signs of distress in the neglected baby. These signs are then linked to what the main authors have studied on parenthood regarding suffering and the psycho-corporal development and affection of the baby. Emphasis is placed on the severity of the disorder regarding the overall development of children in situations of neglect, including reliance on the concept of the disease or development of disharmony, as well as, the limit state of childhood, as developed by Roger Misès.

Keywords : abuse, child abuse, consequences, vulnerability, family, parental deprivation, infant, child development, developmental disharmony, borderline, multiple family problems
