Metabolic syndrome and atypical antipsychotics: recommendations and clinical management

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 87, Number 9, 715-24, Novembre 2011, Neurosciences

Résumé   Texte intégral

Author(s) : Alessandra Solida, Eva Choong, Catherine Lechaire, Chin B. Eap, Philippe Conus

Summary : The introduction of atypical antipsychotics (AA) and their metabolic side effects has attracted greater attention to the potential iatrogenic risk of cardiovascular disease in the population of patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. In this regard, the analysis of the risk/benefit in the use of these drugs is often difficult, requiring the co-ordination of different types of knowledge of the somatic and psychiatric network. In this article, the authors present a review of the metabolic syndrome (MS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a psychiatric population. Based on the latest international recommendations, they propose guideline support for side effects, including metabolics, as well as the introduction of an atypical antipsychotic.

Keywords : schizophrenia, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, esquizofrenia, síndrome metabólico, enfermedad cardiovascular
