Summary : Smoking, which is very prevalent among patients with schizophrenia, is a major public health problem. The decline in life expectancy observed in patients with schizophrenia, particularly due to cardiovascular disease, is largely linked to smoking. Tobacco addiction can be considered a self-medication in certain cognitive abnormalities, which explains the difficulties of patients who try to stop smoking. Stopping smoking in stabilized schizophrenic patients is facilitated by the association of atypical antipsychotics, transdermal nicotine methods and additives. The doses of antipsychotics have to be routinely reassessed after weaning because of higher plasma levels. |
