Summary : The psychopathology of aging confers a particular tendency as regards the expression of mental suffering in the elderly. The fragility of common social perspectives at this age requires a broader approach than at other ages, with a multidisciplinary team, a specific assessment and relevant answers which are longer to build. The psychogeriatric in-patient unit, whether “acute” or “subacute”, which is an integral part of the psychiatric sector fulfils its care-giving mission to the elderly. To be effective, it must be consistent with a number of structures upstream, as well as downstream, such as health, medico-social and social. Ignoring its specificity in the operative sector of psychiatry could create the conditions for a missed opportunity for the elderly patient. The missions of this type of unit are sometimes partly included in the new national Alzheimer plan and allocated to new units under specific names. A re-evaluation should be conducted throughout the health sector in order to promote synergies and avoid waste and a decrease in resources. |
