Anti-smoking Legislation in Psychiatry: an opportunity for the patients?

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 85, Number 7, 621-8, septembre 2009, Addictions

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Laurent Michel, Jean-Philippe Lang

Summary : The legal application of anti-smoking legislation in psychiatric care facilities causes difficulties due to the frequency and intensity of patient smoking and the particular relationship difficulties psychiatric institutions encounter in dealing with smoking. The heavy health burden that psychiatric patients have to carry due to their smoking addiction greatly justifies what professional psychiatric care givers must take into consideration when intergrading their assessment and management of current psychiatric treatment. Although various attempts have been made, this presents an obstacle to treatment for this patient population. International experience has shown that in numerous cases this approach is feasible by using adapted training of care professionals and adequate information for the patient.

Keywords : tobacco, psychiatry, institutional training, prevention, care, legislation
