Pain in psychiatry

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 85, Number 4, 341-5, avril 2009, Algies

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Djéa Saravane

Summary : Pain is an individual experience and is subjective. Its consequences are important on the individual as regards the type of offensive emotions, cognitive responses and reactions in behaviour. In the case of psychotic patients, pain is difficult to perceive and for a long time a certain insensitivity to pain has been suggested. Thus, its evaluation seemed difficult and no specific evaluation tool existed in mental health. Pain exists and this should not be ignored : the specific language or changes in behaviour should suggest a search for a pain phenomenon. The management includes, as in all pain pathology an adapted therapy of medication containing opioid derivatives as well as non-pharmacological treatment.

Keywords : pain, mental health, hypoalgesia, schizophrenia, perception, evaluation, treatment
