Summary : A non-smoking psychiatric health ward: the experience of sector 15 of the Sainte-Anne hospitalThe setting up of a non-smoking general psychiatric service in 2004 in the Henri-Rousselle centre (Sainte-Anne hospital) stemmed from a demand on the part of the institution itself and most of the staff and families\; it also satisfied stricter requirements from administrative and legal bodies. The harmful effects of tobacco, well known to users and carers, were beginning to impact negatively on the overall health approach in this health institution. The absence of any comparable experience in psychiatry, along with the resistance on the part of teams and the commonly held view in psychiatry that it was risky to tackle this problem encouraged us to search for some technical information on tobacco withdrawal and its possible pharmacological effects when combined with psychotropes and, above all, not to fall into a kind of trendy hygienism but to incorporate the legitimate question of tobacco in the service’s institutional care project. |
