Gastroplastic surgery and body’s modifications

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 80, Number 9, 745-52, Novembre 2004, Question ouverte

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Joëlle Lighezzolo, Cécile Blanchouin

Summary : Increasing prevalence of obesity in our societies constitutes now a major public health problem. Facing treatments and preventive care failures, gastroplasty appears today as an efficient method for massive obesity, but studies in this field have still a lack of longitudinal data, to estimate gains and inconveniences in a long term. The authors ask the question about psychological effects of fast and important weight loss, on body image. A review of the literature allows to underline methodological lacks and often inconsistent results presented by some few researchs in this field. Psychodynamic prospects show the necessity to better consider intrapsychic aspects involved in obesity and in psychic readjustment during weight loss.

Keywords : gastroplasty, body image, psychodynamic aspects, obesity
