Psychiatric emergencies: what‘s the recipe?

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 80, Number 3, 219-24, Mars 2004, L‘hôpital en question

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Jean‐Marc Chabannes, Françoise Lasalarie, Jean‐Claude Samuelian

Summary : Our society‘s preference for "everything immediately" has "formatted" what could constitute a new clientele (Active file¡) for our discipline. This would involve a new way of organizing psychiatric hospitalization (behavioural disorders, aggression, episodic paroxysmal anxiety, suicide attempts). Should one resolutely follow this direction, yield to social pressure and use tools such as the UAUP (Intersectorial Psychiatric Emergencies Admissions Unit)? We will endeavour to answer these questions by describing an experiment carried out in the CAP 48 (permanent centre for psychiatric patients) situated away from the "somatic" casualty wards in a neighbouring hospital. The quality of the relationship between the two hospitals, enshrined in their statutes, means that requests for specialized psychiatric advice are dealt with in a framework that is not only welcoming for patients but commensurate to the practice of psychiatry.

Keywords : psychiatric emergencies, hospitalization, admissions units.
