Every bed tells its own story

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 80, Number 3, 181-5, Mars 2004, L‘hôpital en question

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Pascal Dibie

Summary : The author relates the history of beds and their different components (slatted frame or bedsprings, straw or spring mattresses, headrests or pillows, sheets, blankets or quilts, nightclothes or naked sleepers). He describes the evolution of bedroom furniture, stressing the importance of the stove. This panorama over civilisations, eras and climates reveals the variety of uses to which beds have been put: a piece of furniture based on a simple requirement, collective or individual, a source of comfort, a place for public appearance (Louis XIV), a constituent part of social life (Rome), or a private space dedicated to sleeping and dreaming.

Keywords : bed, bedding, bedroom, history of civilisations, ethnology.
