Summary : First results from the social, anthropological and epidemiological survey organised by the World Health Organisation French Collaborative Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health (WHOCC). The first phase of this survey was carried out in 12 locations including Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Guadeloupe and 7 locations in metropolitan France with 10,882 questionnaires being compiled in all. Under analysis are the general public‘s perception of the notions of "mad\\madness", "mentally ill\\mental illness", "depressed\\depression", and its impression of specialised and general aid and care schemes. An epidemiological study is also presented of the main mental disorders in the population at large. Cultural variables are analysed as are their interactions and proposed recommendations. The second phase of the survey is under way. |
