Mood swings in adolescence

l'Information Psychiatrique. Volume 79, Number 8, 709-16, Octobre 2003, Pédopsychiatrie d‘aujourd‘hui

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Maurice Corcos

Summary : Teenage depression is an underestimated phenomenon. Its symptomatology is complex and vigilance is required in the face of a range of unspecific behavioural and somatic manifestations. In the course of their development, all teenagers are confronted with the double threat of narcissistic injury and object loss as they work towards necessary autonomy and individuation. Depressive symptomatology can include a wide range of problem areas with radically differing prognoses. Treatment is lengthy, in terms of cure of acute disorders and prevention, all the more so since these disorders are often recurrent, thus constituting a pejorative prognostic factor. While medicinal prescription is a crucial aid, psychotherapy is usually essential.

Keywords : depression, adolescence, autonomy, narcissism, object loss
