Echoes of old traumas and the reappropriation of the past in old age

Summary : Clinicians concur that old traumas frequently reappear in old age, particularly during critical periods. The status and function of these traumatic elements are studied here from a psychopathological perspective based on Freud and Ferenczi’s theories on trauma. Their incidence is examined according to different clinical situations -- dementia, somatic ailment and also the prospect of end of life -- bringing to light the great diversity of reconstruction modes.
