Colonic stenting in tumoral lesion: what are the indications in curative and palliative situation? |

Summary : Colorectal self-expanding metal stents are able to regain patency of the digestive tract in the colonic cancer stenosis technical and clinical successes rates are about 90 to 100%. In palliative situation, they are sometimes the only treatment proposed with a reduction of hospitalization duration and less morbidity. But some data suggest an increased mortality rate compared to surgery. The second situation is an acute colonic obstruction before curative surgery. The decreased in stoma rate may be of 80% with stents use. Nevertheless, results about morbidity and mortality are sometimes uncertain, not always in favor of their use. Controlled studies, very sparse, are needed to evaluate their real benefits. |
