Summary : At the end of the 1950’s, Irishman Denis Burkitt traveled throughout Africa to explain the epidemiology and the genesis of the facial tumors, which later bore the name of “Burkitt lymphoma”. The article retraces the history of this medical and scientific adventure, which brought, thanks to this Irish doctor, to the discovery, by Anthony Epstein and Yvonne Barr, of the virus responsible for this tumor. Withstanding the scarce therapeutic means which he had on the African continent, Burkitt succeeded in obtaining the first cases of healing for a pathology which until then was fatal. |
