New strategies in immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies

Hématologie. Volume 3, Number 6, 518-27, Novembre-Décembre 1997, Mini-revues et revues

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Agnès Buzyn, Marina Ostankovitch, Mathilde Kemula, Jeannine Choppin, Bruno Varet, Jean-Gérard Guillet

Summary : Recent advances in immunology, concerning antigen presentation and lymphocyte activation, allow at present to consider new therapeutic strategies for cancer patients as vaccination or cellular therapy. Most of these therapies are based on the identification of tumor associated antigens and on the observation of a specific T lymphocyte response in these patients. However, a state of immune tolerance is observed in cancer patients, which seems to allow tumor growth. Thus, understanding of the implied mechanisms becomes important to propose an adapted immuno-intervention. These approaches also concern hematologic malignancies and vaccination trials have been conducted in patients with follicular lymphomas. Many studies of the anti-leukemic immune response are also performed, allowing to expect new therapeutic strategies in these patients.

Keywords : immunotherapy, anti-idiotypic vaccination, GVL.
