Strategies for identifying tumor suppressor genes in acute lymphoblastic leukemias

Summary : Little information is available on the involvement of tumor suppressor genes in leukemogenesis whereas the role of numerous oncogenes has been largely documented. However, cytogenetic studies found that some chromosomal regions are the site of frequent deletions in leukemic blast cells suggesting that they may harbour tumor suppressor genes. In addition to cytogenetics, several recently described techniques are now available whereby the whole genome can be screened. Some of these techniques can pinpoint deleted genomic areas and lead to the identification of suppressor genes from their localization. Moreover, new strategies devised to analyze the difference between normal and cancer cell genomes have recently been described. Combining different approaches should lead to a better understanding of suppressor genes involvement in leukemogenesis.
