Multiple sclerosis and epilepsy

Epilepsies. Volume 22, Number 4, 276-80, Décembre 2010, Épilepsie et inflammation

Résumé   Texte intégral

Author(s) : Michael W Mann

Summary : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with an increase of the prevalence of epilepsy (estimation: 2,3% of patients with MS) with respect to the general population (0,4 %-0,8 %). Epileptic seizures can occur at any time in the evolution of MS and they are correlated neither with duration or clinical severity of MS. The prognosis of epilepsy is generally, but not always, good. The seizure pattern is variable, focal seizures with or without secondary generalisation and generalised seizures occur. There is no first choice drug clearly established. Drugs not aggravating the handicap of MS and with little or no drug interaction should be tried first.

Keywords : epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, antiepileptic drugs, drug interferences
