Summary : The present study aimed at investigating the effect of temporal lobe surgery on cognitive functions and behavioral modifications. The neuropsychological examination covered intelligence, verbal/figural memory, executive functions and visuo-perceptual efficiency. Patients underwent neuropsychological assessment preoperatively and at 6 months follow-up. Subjective self-reported memories and behavioural modifications were assessed by questionnaires.
The outcome was assessed paying particular attention on the side (left/right) of surgery and the presence of hippocampal sclerosis or not. Preoperatively, we found no significant differences between right and left temporal lobe patients regarding cognitive functionning; however our results suggested that hippocampal damage was related with memory deficiencies.
Postoperatively (6 months), we showed that left surgery caused a drop in verbal memory performances, whereas no significant deficiencies were observed after right temporal lobe resections. Hence the results supported findings from previous studies. Our data also confirmed that left temporal lobe epilepsy patients, without hippocampal sclerosis, had to be considered cautiously when surgery is proposed. It remains that, all the patients felt an improvement of there well-being after surgery. |
