As the journal enters its nineteenth year we have to report the sad loss of two of our founder Board members: Ruggero Caputo, who died in May 2007 and Jean-Marie Naeyaert, in July 2007. They were both still active members of their clinical/research communities and will be greatly missed.

On a happier note, the EJD has had another successful year. At the recent Board Meeting in Buenos Aires we heard that the impact factor continues to improve and new countries (e.g. Pakistan, Bahrain and Nigeria) continue to be added to the list of 40+ submitting countries.

As reported last year [1] single case reports are now published as ‘correspondence’ (86 of 104 single case reports published in 2007). This rubric has proved to be very successful and has enabled us to publish over 100 single case reports in both 2006 and 2007, compared to around 40 per year previously.

The online submission system is now functioning well and over 3/4 of submissions are made this way. One of the advantages of this is the speed of communication, which means that we are able to give a first decision on most papers within a month of receipt.

To all our readers and authors, the whole world over, I wish an active and productive 2008.
