General medicine became a specialty in 2004 and the first specialists in general medicine were qualified more than 10 years ago. Has this recognition led to a change in the functioning of the French health system? The analysis of the perception of patients, general practitioners and institutional representatives provides elements of response. More than a decade after its creation, the DES (Diplôme d’études spécialisées) in general medicine has gradually changed the university landscape but has not allowed the societal recognition of the profession or its restructuring.
