This article reports a retrospective assessment based on an analysis of prescriptions for antiretroviral (ARV) drugs dispensed at the pharmacy of the central hospital of Yaounde, Cameroon, which is one of the centers undertaking the care of patients infected with HIV. In the course of 21 months, 1.832 prescriptions were issued to 669 patients. The regularity with which the prescriptions were renewed has been analysed in 230 patients selected on the basis that they had been receiving their treatments for more than 4 months and had been seen at the centre on more than one occasion. The ratio between the number of prescriptions issued and the number of prescriptions theoretically appropriate permits to follow and evaluate the quality of our service, to check adherence to procedures of writing and issuing prescriptions, and above all to have a simple indicator of patient compliance. This indicator should be capable of being tested as a function of site, of type or duration of treatment.
