Referencing midline catheters was planned in order to reduce PICCs use and repeated insertions of peripheral venous catheters. But increasing the types of vascular accesses may also increase the risk of lack of knowledge and confusion between the different catheters. Confusing Midlines and PICCs may result in a risk of injecting medicines that are contraindicated with peripheral venous access, and a risk of infection due to an inappropriate holding time. An evaluation of professionnal's knowledge was conducted to assess the confusion risk between Midlines and PICCs. Twenty-eight professionnals were interrogated. Eighty percent recognized the PICC whereas only 14 % identified the Midline. When pictures of PICC and Midlines set up on the arm were presented, only 11% of the professionnals were able to distinguish them. Only 11% knew the utilization rules of the Midlines and 25% knew the possible holding time. After an information on these two catheters, 64% of the professionnals felt that there was still a risk of confusion between the two. The results were analyzed and led to the creation of a poster in order to facilitate the identification of the catheter and to remind the utilization rules. The anesthesia nurse was involved to oversee the nursing care on the midlines. A training has to be setup for the designated nurse in the care units.
