A hemodialysis generator has to be disinfected between two successive hemodialysis sessions. In the adult hemodialysis ward at the Clermont-Ferrand teaching hospital, the disinfection protocol combines thermal and chemical disinfection. We compared the efficiency of two generator disinfection agents used in hemodialysis : Dialox® and Oxagal®. We studied the microbiological efficiency of the disinfectants (dialysis bath samples and swabs from generators) and the physical and chemical parameters of the dialysis bath (pH and osmolality). The clinical condition of the hemodialysed patients and the effect of the disinfectants on the sensitive parts of the generators were taken into account. The statistical analysis of the results showed no significant difference between the two disinfectants for pH, osmolality and germ count. The two clinical manifestations observed during dialysis were unrelated to any microbiological contamination of the hemodialysis water. Inspection of the sensitive parts of the generators revealed no scaling with either disinfectant. Hence : Dialox® and Oxagal® displayed the same efficiency and tolerance for generator disinfection
