Biocompatibility is an important factor to choose artificial membranes in extrarenal blood purification. Synthetic membranes are characterized by high permeability and good biocompatibility. With these membranes made in synthetic polymers, immunology activation of fraction of complement, and cellular activation are lower than cellulosic membranes. The production of cytokines like interleukine 1 and the TNFalpha(Tumor Necrosis Factor), implied in complications chronic hemodialysis, is reduced. Others factors of bio-incompatibility produce allergic and inflammatory manifestations, but biocompatibility of dialysis membranes depends on other factors like sterilization, dialysate and tubing used in extrarenal blood purification methods.
