A computer software running in the network, has been designed and confirmed to manage data requirements for the prescription, centralised preparation, as well as administration of the antineoplastic agents (AA), in Nantes University Hospital. It forms the crown of the Oncologic Clinical Pharmacy department’s (UPCO) quality assurance system. The software package which is developed under Delphi® 2.0, uses an Oracle® data base with a Windows® 95/NT interface. The access to the mainframe is secured by several passive and active safeguards set at the identified critical points. The prescription by protocol is privileged but stays open to any change controlled by the system. The record of the prescriptions is handled with the calculation of the cumulated doses received by the patient. During the preparation, a formulation worksheet as well as a nurse administration plan are automatically printed. Various tools allow to sort out « the treatment lines to be validated » by the senior pharmacist. The – effective or non effective – administrations of the AA and the adjuvant therapeutics are confirmed in the system by the nurse (e.g., which makes the updating of the received treatments reliable). After five months of running and more than 3 000 preparations, the system fulfils the expressed needs of all the users, during the development of its specifications.
