Aging in particular puts to the test the mental ability of men and women to deal with changes and losses that do not fail to constantly appear and subsequently participate in a clash with the inevitable prospect of death. Due to narcissistic fragility, borderline functioning in particular create difficulties and insecurity caused by the recurring experience of changes, separations and bereavements. Based on experience in “memory consultations”, where patient complaints are centred on the failure of cognitive skills and, consequently, on the undermining of their integrity and autonomy, the author explains the central psychic problems motivated by the borderline patients where the issue of dependence is particularly crucial.
