Esophageal, gastroduodenal and colorectal stents are commonly used in the management of patients with malignant stenosis obstructing the digestive system. In palliative situations of symptomatic esophageal, gastroduodenal or malignant colonic symptomatic stenosis, the feasibility, low morbidity and good short-term symptomatic results of these medical devices are now well established. Gastrointestinal stents are clearly indicated in palliative situations where the main objective is to improve the quality of life of the patients but they are not generally recommended in the curative strategies of obstructive cancers of the digestive tract. This paper aims at explaining the indications of digestive stents as a palliative treatment for digestive cancer.
