When the inflammatory disease is in remission and a quality of life is retrieved, many patients express the wish to travel for professional or recreational reasons. The inflammatory disease should not be a brake for such a project but it is useful to implement at different times appropriate care to minimize the risk of infectious diseases in this potentially weakened population. The incidence of infectious diseases in the traveling IBD population is not known but there is no reason to believe that it differs from a control population under the same conditions.

Preventive measures are necessary and must be adapted to minimize the risk of infection and, moreover, an adequate and joint management by different health actors is recommended upon return of the trip. The gastroenterologist must be aware of these different aspects and should not hesitate to refer his patient to a specialist in tropical medicine.
