The definition of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is clinical and based on the Rome IV criteria. The different IBS sub-types can be specified using the Bristol stool scale on stool consistency. The Francis score is a severity score of the disease evaluating the symptoms over the last ten days. These scales/scores are useful in clinical practice for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients.
