Although, steady progress has been made in the adjuvant chemotherapy of colon cancer, a subset of patients does not benefit from optimized treatment. Gene expression profiling is an emerging tool which enables screening of thousand of genes in patients with distinct clinical outcomes in order to identify subsets of genes with differential expression between patient groups. The development of robustly annotated clinical databases of patients with early colon cancer, including those from international clinical trials, and the collection of biologic specimens linked to these clinical databases might give us opportunities to identify new prognostic and/or predictive biomarkers.
