The so-called hepatitis G virus (HGV) or GB virus C (GBV-C) is a recently discovered RNA virus and has a worldwide distribution. The HGV prevalence in blood donor populations is high (1-5% according to the countries). The virus is parenterally transmitted and associated with acute or chronic hepatitis. However, most HGV-infected patients are viremic in the absence of liver disease. The responsability of HGV in some cases of fulminant hepatitis is controversial.
