Reasons to treat pharmaceuticals and personal care products as potential contaminants of marine environment are discussed in the light of recent background data on freshwater, estuary and coastal water contamination. The strategy of risk assessment and risk management of dangerous substances embodied in the 1992 OSPAR convention is put forward.
