The pharmaceutical substances in the aquatic environment have been highlighted for 20 years. This paper reviews the knowledge of concentration levels measured in the different environmental compartments of wastewater, surface water, and groundwater. The comparison of data identified on a global scale with those obtained in France shows a lack of country-specific measures for this type of pollution. Developments in water use, technology, practices, and legislation are leading to new trends in environmental contamination by pharmaceutical residues.
