This news is based on the following article: Baumann F, Carbone M. Environmental risk of mesothelioma in the United States: An emerging concern – epidemiological issues. J Toxicol Environ Health B Crit Rev 2016; 19: 231-49. doi: 10.1080/10937404.2016.1195322

A study of recent deaths from mesothelioma in the USA (1999-2010) shows that although cases linked to occupational asbestos exposure are declining, deaths associated with environmental exposure to asbestos fibers are increasing. Combining two indicators – sex ratio and proportion of young subjects –with a sufficiently fine spatial scale makes it possible to identify the geographically defined zones where environmental exposure must be studied.
