From September 1981 onwards, I spent a sabbatical term at Stanford on the campus of the prestigious university at Palo Alto. On the outward trip I spent a few days in New York, where I was present at the Gay and Lesbian March on 5th Avenue, a real carnival full of colour and and placards with fanciful slogans like "Great Spirit protects squawman". No-one knew what was going to happen; the risks were poorly understood; there had not so far been any deaths.
