Since 1974, psoralen plus ultraviolet A radiation (PUVA) has been widely used for the treatment of a variety of skin diseases. Because the pathology of diseases such as psoriasis, vitiligo, alopecia, lichen planus, atopic dermatitis, and graft-versus-host disease is thought to involve immune mechanisms, it has been suggested that at least some of the beneficial effects of PUVA may be due to its immunomodulatory properties.
