Risques virologiques associés aux matières premières extraites de tissus animaux utilisées dans la fabrication des médicaments

Virologie. Volume 1, Number 5, 413-22, Septembre - Octobre 1997, Revues

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : M. Eloit

Summary : The risks of viral contamination of medicinal drugs whose composition includes starting material of animal origin is described. These starting materials can be used for the fabrication of active ingredients, excipients or during the fabrication process. Zoonotic viruses, transmissible from animals to humans following natural conditions of contact, are described. Nevertheless, potential risks cannot be limited to these viruses and the possible role of other animal viruses is discussed. Controlling these risks needs careful selection of the origin of the starting material and, most often, experimental evaluation of the ability of the industrial process to eliminate or inactivate contaminating viruses. Despite the fact that starting materials of animal origin are probably safer than those extracted from human tissues, specific care must be taken to limit the corresponding risk.

Keywords : Virus - Zoonosis - Medicinal drug - Animal - Iatrogenic.
