The epic of the vaccination against rabies

Virologie. Volume 6, Number 2, 89-104, Mars - Avril 2002, Revues

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Y. Rotivel, M. Goudal, P. Perrin, N. Tordo

Summary : « Rabies prophylaxis after a bite is possible. An Institute devoted to vaccination against rabies must be founded. » These words ended Louis Pasteur's lecture, on March 1st, 1886, at the French Academy of Sciences. This announcement concluded the epic of Pasteur's studies on rabies which reached its apogee in July 1985, when the young Alsacian Joseph Meister, severely bitten by a dog presumably rabid, was successfully treated against the disease. This ultimate step of Pasteur's debt to science, started in 1880, inspirited by the studies of Pierre-Victor Galtier, Professor at the Veterinary School in Lyon. Pasteur was totally aware, while naming his method of post-exposure prophylaxis « vaccination » in paying homage to Jenner, that he had established a new and decisive concept for knowledge, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
