The outbreak of tospovirus

Virologie. Volume 2, Number 5, 357-67, Septembre-Octobre 1998, Revues

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : B. Moury, A. Palloix, K. Gebre Selassie, G. Marchoux

Summary : Tospoviruses are the only plant virus genus in the Bunyaviridæ family, a virus group characterized by a single-stranded RNA genome, two out of the three constitutive RNA molecules possessing an ambisense organization. The emergence of tospoviruses has several causes : changes in agricultural practices, worldwide spread of efficient thrips vector species and the recent adaptation of these viruses to the plant kingdom. The epidemics of tospovirus diseases are the main production limiting factor in many areas and on many cultivated plants. Management of these viral diseases is difficult : control of thrips is not always efficient and very few resistant cultivars are presently available. Prophylactic dispositions should be set up to avoid further dispersion of infected plants and thrips.

Keywords : Tospovirus – Bunyaviridæ – Thrips – Emergence – Disease prevention.
