Focus on leptomeningeal metastases and their treatment |

Summary : Leptomeningeal metastases are a complication of cancers. They affect the central nervous system and occur in 3 to 5% of patients with cancer. They are characterised by the breach of malignant cells into the subarachnoid space. They are then disseminated into the entire central nervous system by the cerebrospinal fluid. The diagnosis is complex and made by the clinical examination of the patient, the neuroimaging assessment and the cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Without treatment, the prognostic is poor with a median survival of 4 to 6 weeks. Radiotherapy associated to intrathecal chemotherapy is the specific treatment of leptomeningeal metastases. A medline search helped us to investigate different available treatments for leptomeningeal metastases and new therapeutic alternatives. |
