Summary : Introduction: the objective of the present study was to describe representations from the elderly about their drug regimen. Methods: 15 semi-structured interviews were carried-out with elderly patients controlling their drug regimen in an autonomous way. An automatic quantitative text analysis was developed using Alceste
© software to determine main word distribution patterns (Hierarchical Descending Clustering). Results: 67% of the corpus was taken into account by the software. 3 groups of words were identified: "Global environment of the patient" (57% of corpus) in which the physician is the "judge" of drug regimen and adapts it to the patient\; the "remedy" and its ambivalent effects on the body (24%), its efficacy being linked tightly to its toxicity\; the "everyday living" of the elderly with the drug treatment (19%). Discussion: 3 specific elements must be taken into account, when constructing a therapeutic education strategy for the elderly: 1) the central position of the digestion organs in their representation of benefits and risks of drugs\; 2) their perception of progressive loss of efficacy of drugs during time\; 3) the fear for dependence and loss of memory associated with psychotropic drugs intake. |
