Summary : Needleless connectors have been introduced into clinical practice to prevent microbial hazards with infusion materials. In this study we evaluate three of these systems by comparing the consequences of microbial contamination of the devices. We test Bionecteur 2® (Vygon), Connecta Clave® (Ohmeda) and Smart Site® (Ivac). All these devices were compared with the stopper system. Ten of those systems were contaminated with >Staphylococcus aureus, disinfected with alcohol chlorhexidine 0.2 % and sterile culture broth was passed through. After 48 h, only two of these devices presented a microbial contamination : one Bionecteur 2® and one stopper. After statistical analysis, was significatively observed no difference between all these devices and the stopper system.

Keywords : infusion material, needleless connectors system, microbial contamination.
