Summary : Transient neonatal hypothyroidism is mainly caused by iodine deficiency or by iatrogenic iodine intake. Cutaneous passage in newborn or in mother during delivery and breast feeding is the main iatrogenic intake. Cutaneous passage during pregnancy is more unusual. We report the case of a newborn with a neonatal transient hypothyroidism because of povidone iodine pessary administration to the mother during the last 7 days before delivery. Thyroxin was administered to the newborn during 3 weeks and thyroid hormonal blood plasma rates normalized 24 days after birth. This observation confirms the iatrogenic foetal risk of povidone iodine prolonged use, which has justified the contraindication of pregnancy and breast feeding. |
