Classification of African seasonal hydrological regimes: a potential tool for monitoring environmental change

Science et changements planétaires / Sécheresse. Volume 21, Number 2, 147-53, avril-mai-juin 2010, Article de recherche

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : David Brousseau, Ali A Assani, Françoise Kalenga, Muaka Mbenza

Summary : The “natural flow regime” concept was applied to define streamflow characteristics and the associated hydrological variables in order to classify and characterize African seasonal hydrological regimes. The hydrological variables were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis (ascending hierarchical classification and variance analysis). Nine seasonal hydrological regimes were ultimately identified and characterized. These regimes reflect the influence of the length of the rainy season and orography on streamflow.

Keywords : Africa, hydrological regime, hydrology, rainfall, rivers and streams, statistical analysis, water flow
