Economic boom and environmental crisis of Nouakchott, a Sahelian capital

Science et changements planétaires / Sécheresse. Volume 21, Number 1, 63-70, janvier-février-mars 2010, Article de recherche

Résumé   Article gratuit

Author(s) : Zeineddine Nouaceur

Summary : Nouakchott is experiencing unprecedented economic development. This prosperity however reveals the limits of a fragile city as it undergoes true distensions between the more important requirements of modern life and limited urban equipment. This change is amplified by precedent urban growth and badly mastered management. The consequences of such a situation are very harmful to the environmental framework. To escape this crisis, the Moresque capital has to rethink its urban politics according to a well balanced plan in which the urban fabric has to adapt itself not only to the population which uses it, but also to the natural constraints which characterize it.

Keywords : degradation of the environment, Mauritania, migrations, urbanization, urban waste water management
