Groundwater salinization and vulnerability of coastal resources to climate change: Coastal plain of Saïdia, Morocco

Summary : Pollution constitutes a permanent risk of ground water resource limitation. Increasing urbanization and economic development contribute to quantitative and qualitative ground water deterioration. The protection and the preservation of these resources are top priority necessities, particularly in arid zones where ground water constitutes the main hydraulic source. Hence, the cartography of environmental vulnerability to pollution of aquifers was considered as an efficient tool to limit and control quality degradation risks of these waters. The Geographical Information Systems represent the best method to solve the main problems in the vulnerability survey. Indeed, they facilitate the superposition of maps from different sources and the interpolation of punctual data. This methodology is applied to the water table of Saidia. The constructed map of vulnerability shows five classes of vulnerability: very weak, weak, average, elevated and highly elevated.
