Summary : Two hundred forty-nine camel breeders were studied in the three biggest areas of the dromedary distribution in Algeria: the South East (Souf), the South West (Tindouf) and the Extreme South (Hoggar) to identify the existing types of breeders and to understand how they work. Three modes of breeding have been identified with specific types of activity related to the region (wood collection in the Souf region) or systems of herd breeding common to the regions of study (semi-nomadic, nomadic or sedentary). The analysis of diversity and durability of these activities, taking into account the ecological, economic and social changes, has permitted us to conclude that only the semi-nomadic system will remain stable and deserves to be aided to find forms of integration, which will support the perpetuity of this life style as well as a respect of ecological equilibrium. The obtained results will serve as a basis to any action plan, which aims at preserving this declining species and will facilitate the orientation of dromedary exploitation towards butchers for meat as the other aspects of the dromedary polyfunctionality have lost a lot of their prestige. |
